Indya Vassell is a Miami-based photographer and visual artist whose work explores identity, culture, and the power of being seen.

Raised in South Florida, Indya’s journey began long before she picked up a professional camera. She attended Henry D. Perry Middle School, where she found the Jason Taylor Reading Room and spent the next three years as a student in the program. Indya’s academic potential led her to becoming a Jason Taylor Scholar through the Foundation’s partnership with Take Stock in Children and upon graduating from Miramar High School, she earned a full college tuition scholarship.

That opportunity led Indya to Florida International University, where photography found her.

While studying at FIU, Indya began photographing the university’s athletics department for the student newspaper. What started as a way to document collegiate sports quickly became a language of its own.

Her early work in sports opened the door to a career photographing professional athletes, celebrities, and cultural figures. But as her practice evolved, so did her understanding of what she wanted her camera to say.

Today, Indya is expanding beyond the traditional boundaries of sports photography, building a visual practice centered on Black culture, portraiture, fashion, and contemporary storytelling. Her images are intentional, cinematic, and deeply human, often finding beauty in strength, vulnerability, presence, and the environments people inhabit.

From a scholarship that made college possible to a camera that became her career, Vassell’s story is one of opportunity transformed into perspective. Now, she uses that perspective to create images that reflect where she comes from, challenge how athletes are seen, and document the culture she continues to be shaped by.

Based in Miami, Indya is not simply documenting the world around her. She is building a visual language of her own.
